Hull measurement, patterns 'reasonable fit'
There was some discussion at the recent SA Nationals regarding the interpretation of the words 'reasonable fit' in the rules in reference to the patterns, particularly the bottom panel pattern.
I would like to highlight the chine-to-chine measurements in the rules which are: at main bulkhead: 1155mm-1175mm, at 1500 from transom: 1220mm-1250mm and at Transom: 965mm-980mm.
I am not sure where the pattern dimension lies within these ranges but clearly there is some tolerance for variation from the pattern.

Ahh, that old chestnut. I'm sure I wouldn't need three guesses as to who raised the discussion.

It's a long time since I looked at the rules in relation to this. The last time was 5 years ago. [CONTENT REMOVED BY SITE MANAGER]

I seem to remember the wording was 'reasonable trimming' not 'reasonable fit' but this may have changed. Either way there is no definition as to what is considered reasonable. On top of this there are the measurements you mention.

In my humble opinnion, any attempt to throw a boat out based on this rule would not stand up to legal scrutiny.

Re: Hull measurement, patterns 'reasonable fit'
You would think (and hope) that the patterns lie in the middle of the tolerances...or am I being too presumptious? Maybe this is further rational for movement to "measurement stations" as discussed at Henley measurers meeting? (I for one am not a fan of placing patterns on a hull to prove legality/or intent....and it just confuses the hell out of people outside the class) As Damien says, "this old Chestnut again".
Hopefully it can be put to bed over the next couple of years so we can move onto the more important issue of getting bums in boats and ensuring the 125s future as a National class.

Re: Hull measurement, patterns 'reasonable fit'
Yes this rule has always been a bit of a funny one. It seemed to first become an issue for most when foam boats first came in all those years ago, as the rules have changed much over the years due different people in the class.
It was that all professional built boats had to be built from a mould that came from the 125 associationns plug not sure if that plug is still around?? So then all the foam boats built by boat builders would be all the same and if a build was found to have changed their mould then they would be banned from building 125s for a period of time. Eg the Botterill
I am not 100% sure how the association came up with the measurements for the plug or the official 125 shape. It was during that time very emotional and a lengthy process for the foam boat to come it and as per now things get lost and forgotten about.
To the best of my memory in QLD they started to build the home built 125 as per the rules and needed a pattern but know body had a copy. So then the pattern was taken from the NSW boat Chillout. The problem is that the 125 pattern does not really fit that well on a boat that has been built from the 125 plug.
The question has always been what is a reasonable fit? And what is the tolerance? How where to hold the pattern?
I have not been to the last couple of nationals, but so far since foam boats came in none of the winners have used one that really pushes the rules. Many may find it hard to believe but boats built in the days of stitch and glue pushed the rules and more cheating was through to be going on.
