2009~2010 Results from Henley SC, South Australia

125 Association National Championship
33rd Regatta 2009~2010
at Henley Sailing Club, South Australia

The Invitation Race was sailed in perfect conditions for the lightweights.
11 knots of wind at the start, lifting to 13Kn then dropping to 8Kn during the race. The sloppy seas made it very difficult to keep the boat “in the groove” and the 125ers at the front of the fleet displayed considerable skills.
The fleet of 23 boats enjoyed the bright sunshiny day and the zinc cream companies were very pleased.
There was one retiree, 3175 Venomous is going to learn how to tie a spinnaker halyard knot that will not come undone. Nick Major in Mk2 learnt the lesson of the day. They led all the way, crossing the finish 2min 16 sec ahead of the next boat, however had not signed on. All yachties know what that means.
Predator had a bad luck day. At the leeward mark they were dropping the spinnaker when a Paper Tiger came right through their transom – “overtaking boat”!! They should be on the water tomorrow.
Congratulations to the more timid tail enders. At the start all 125er had crossed the line within 25 seconds of the start signal.

Heat 1 was also designed for the lightweights.
A frustrating light southerly with 10 degree swings made it difficult for the Race Officer.
A 25 minute delay in high temperatures is not fun. However it was a wise decision, as when the race got under way a fair course was sailed with lots of opportunities to play the wind shifts. This is part of the sport and it was interesting to see the changes of fortune depending on the skill [luck] of certain decisions.
The most dramatic of these would have been Rob & Sam Davy in the oldest timber boat in the fleet. 2366, Blue Streak was 13th at the end of the first triangle and was 6th at the finish. 3036 Life’s a Beach and 3118 Panic Attack made similar dramatic improvements in their placings.
By the way, Nick & Biancia did sign on. They must have had a dozen “mothers” making sure it happened. Proved the Invitation Race was not a fluke with a solid 2½ minute win.
Looking at the weather charts we won’t see decent winds until Saturday.

Heat 2 was started in a reasonably brisk northerly, after a short delay, waiting for the breeze to settle enough to get a course in.
On the start it was obvious that we have a headline grabbing Victorian 125er. Mk2 in close proximity and clear view of the RO was over the line. Restarting last they set out to chase the fleet down.
Wind changes were a plenty, giving lots of opportunities to vigilant navigators. It was a toss up between an easterly slant off the shore vs a westerly slant out to sea. Luck played a big part.
As can be expected positions changed each leg. At the end of the first triangle, Panic Attack was 11th but kept their cool to be 6th at the end of the loop , holding that place to the finish. Wotever gained enormously with a well positioned lift from the west to improve from 20th at the end of the first triangle to 16th at the end of the loop but could not maintain their luck. Omnivore recovered from a disastrous start and last at the first triangle to 19th at the end of the loop and continued the pressure on other sailors to finish 15th.
In a failing breeze the RO set a short (260m) windward (25° to the left) leg from the leeward mark to the finish. In the building heat I am sure all 125 sailors were pleased to cross the finish line.

Heat 3 in the afternoon was delayed with sailors held ashore in near 40° temperatures and no wind.
Eventually a northwesterly materialised and there was movement on the beach. I think the RO must have used up all his luck in getting the breeze to materialise as the course laying boat sucked the line of a key mark into its jet intake. Transferring the course gear to another boat did not take very long, but getting the gear for this essential mark from the distant club-house seemed to take forever.
The words of one junior 125er sailing past a wallowing start boat “Can we go racing?” sums it up.
First start was the Paper Tigers and with 1½ minutes to their start signal, the wind swung rapidly from 280° to 180°. Back to square one!
Eventually we were off to a good start in a building sea breeze. There was 20Knots and big seas at the finish.
Unfortunately the results were compromised by errors with the finishing line. It is fair to say there was mass confusion and an attempt to finalise a fair set of results is in the strange set of points in the results sheet.
Handicaps were not applied to this race and the less said about it the better.

Heat 4 the heavy weather sailors got their chance.
A SW sea breeze at 210° was matched to a very difficult sea with short steep waves. The wind was not all that strong at the start, 16-17 knots but slowly increased to 20 knots for the later finishers.
Caution was displayed by the front runners who could not afford boat damage and therfore a DNF. Spinnakers remained in the bag and the rest of the fleet followed suite. Glimpses of colour on the downwind legs was rare and usually brief.
There were 3 DNS from the lesser experienced sailors and that reduced the strain on the rescue boat crews.
5 DNF is indicative of the troubles being experienced in the short chop, mainly with rudder problems.

Heat 5 was a repeat of heat 4, however the average wind may have been slightly stronger.
Now that the Impulse Regatta is completed, the 125's were moved to course are B. Not all sailors read the notice board for course details.
5 of the fleet reported to the original course area A and 2 were late leaving the beach. Oops!
Kraken Up displayed good skills in the conditions to work through the fleet to finish 8th from a 3 minute "penalty". Flashback also showing the WA 125er's preference for a breeze.
Caution was displayed by the front runners who could not afford boat damage and therfore a DNF. Spinnakers remained in the bag and the rest of the fleet followed suite.
Buckle up Spankey put up their lovely Pink kite and has a fantastic ride in the roller coaster seas closing to be with Mk2 at the end of the first triangle.

Heat 6 was a typical morning race. The Race Officer had a challenge to get a steady breeze and a short postponement was necessary. Luckily a 220° breeze materialised and a start  was commmenced, with a strong tide pushing boats over the line. Venomous & Trilogy were premature starters with Venomous returning and Trilogy sailing for nought.
The race was a typical light breeze with plenty of opportunities to play wind shifts. The finish saw the same sequence as the overall series line results, Mk2, Black Pearl then Carnivore.
As expected there were some close finishes Blue Streak, Panic Attack, Flashback and Boarlistic all finishing within 18 seconds.
From my vantage point on the finishing boat I was disappointed by the lack of finishing technique. A sailor will fight hard for the favoured start but relaxes at the finish. The number of sailors who sailed along the line rather than the shortest course accross it, was surprising. Valuable seconds to count for a handicap place were wasted.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Wednesday 7th Jan 2009

Sorry for the late post following a fantastic presentation night put on by the the Qld Division. Everyone had a great time. Thanks to Tim & Kerrie for MC'ing the night. Tim(inator)'s guitar work & song composition was one of the highlights of the night.

Yesterdays race was in 15-18 knots again from the SE. Waters were are flatter & faster - some say the fastest first reach all regatta. After the first windward She Waits for No Man skipped away to a handy lead. Mk 2 and J chased her down to the finish just falling short. Fourth across the line was Shake 'n Bake - a great placing after some bad luck earlier in regatta. "Mr Consistency" Peter Charlton and son Glen were 5th. Give Way gave it their all for 6th, followed by Chilled Out in 7th. Blurred Image - the surprise crew of the regatta and unofficial "rookies of the year"came in 8th. 9th were Apollo - making a late regatta charge, and 10th were Waterloo.

Overall placings for the regatta - National Champions are Mk 2 - Jim Scott & William Morris. 2nd are J - Doug Brewer & John Anderson. 3rd (and first all female crew, in their 10th Anniversary of Nationals together) was Waterloo - Jenny Anderson & Joanne Luscombe.

Handicap results were closely fought - a first on handicap in the last race clinched the title for Give Way, Mk 2 - who improved their performance all regatta 2nd, Black Pearl 3rd.

Juniors was all Qld - Far Beyond Driven 1st, Accelerando 2nd and Chemically Enhanced 3rd. Masters - J 1st, Chilled Out 2nd & Give Way 3rd.

Timber Hull - the first time for this group & hopefully not the last - Photron 1st, Luff Affair 2nd & Me 'n Dad (local Maryborough father & daughter) 3rd.

Interstate Trophy went to Qld, from NSW & Victoria.

The President's Trophy for 2008 was awarded to the Anderson Family. Over the past five years since the Qld NEC President last awarded this trophy, the Anderson's have typified the family spirit in our class. Dad provides a "hero" status to many of the younger sailors. Together with others, he has re-ignited the Darling Point Sailing Squadron, and is passionate about providing affordable sailing to all. Sons, Chris & Jack, have coached many of the pre-nationals events, and contribute to coaching in other states. Daughter Jenny is heavily involved in coaching at Lourdes Hill College, and sails with "her girls" on club race days to pass onto them her experience. And Mum ("the rock") Sandra is always supportive of all her family (and her extended 125 family) in their sailing endeavours.

Well done to all competitors. National President Bob Sayer claimed this to be the unofficial "World Titles" of the 125 sailing class, not just the National Titles, and rightly so. And after the "best regatta ever", we pause and remember those that could not be with us at these titles - our family & friends who have passed away in 2008.

Your scribe signing off from Hervey Bay - let's all rally behind your State titles & the next Nationals in Adelaide.

Good Sailing.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Lourdes Hill College SC Monday: Tonight everyone is enjoying the hospitality of sailing families from Lourdes Hill College (Brisbane) with a steak & sausage sizzle. They are a great supporter of 125 sailing in Brisbane - with a count of over 20 past & present girls & families present at this regatta.

Racing could be termed more like "madddd day monday". We had good breezes 15-20 knits - again from the SE. This gives flat waters off Scarness, so conducive to good sensible sailing. Those pressing for trophy positions took their chances - some worked a Kraker, some were dismal failures. Three broken centre boards, minor damage to spars, and one a possible (accidental) broken nose - how "not" to deal with your skipper - lucky no men were on board otherwise it could have got ugly.

Mk 2 -Jim Scott & William Morris showed class with another commanding win. Kraken Up chased them till the last mark and had to settle for 2nd. Waterloo was third looking over their shoulders for the chasing pack from Qld of Animated Paradox (4th), Apollo (OCS), Blurred Image (5th). Next came a contingent from interstate - Aftershock (6th), Imagine (7th), Give Way (8th & second time in the top ten), Black Pearl (9th), Blonde in Disguise (10th) & Limelite (was 11th but deserves a mention anyway).

Overall after 6 races (and 1 drop) Mk 2 stratched their lead to 11 points, Waterloo jumped into 2nd on 19 points, and J is third on 21 points. Handicap has Give Way 1st, Blonde in Disguise 2nd and Black Pearl 3rd.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Sunday 4th January 2009 - "Slow Day Sunday"

Race 4 was sailed this morning in a SE of 15-20 knots and gusts around 25. The shifts and gusts looked hard to predict - let alone handle, with several of the top boats taking a swim. 15 boats either elected to not start after venturing out to see what it was like, or retired. One with a broken side stay.

1st - Mk 2 - Jim Scott & William Morris from Black Rock Yacht Club (Vic)
2nd - Blurred Image - Thomas Richers & Wayne Price from Maryborough Yacht Club (Qld)
3rd - Apollo - Justin Spillman & Tiernan Williams from Townsville Sailing Club (Qld)
Race 5 was sailed this afternoon 20-25 knots. Again very tricky conditions for eveyone. 14 boats again retired or did not start. One broke a rudder blade, and hopefully not his crew's ribs. She looked sore coming in. Thanks to Dr Chris Taylor she was able to walk home.
1st - Mk 2 - details as above (Vic)
2nd - Imagine - Peter Charlton & son Glen from South Lake Macquarie Amatuer SC (NSW)
3rd - Waterloo - Jenny Anderson & Joanne Luscombe from Brisbane Sailing Squadron (QLD)
Thanks to todays racing overall championships look like this (with 2 races to sail):
1st - Mk 2 - Jim Scott & William Morris (Vic) on 10 points
2nd - J - Doug Brewer & John Anderson (Qld) on 11 points
3rd - Waterloo - Jenny Anderson & Joanne Luscombe (Qld) on 16 points
Next Race is Tuesday, with one more on Wednesday.

2008-2009 Nationals from Hervey Bay

Saturday 3rd January

Today was "Need for Speed" Saturday.

Over 10 Boats went out today in the quest for speed, the Hervey Bay Air Sea Rescue reported 25-32 knots, and today was the perfect opportunity to see who would be the fastest. The 1/4 mile course line was set close to shore so that those who didn't wish to get wet or break their boats could watch the action up close.

With the course set close to shore the boats needed a good gust to come through at the right time.

1st was Blurred Image a local Maryborough boat with a time of 66 secs for 1/4 mile; average speed 13.64 knots

2nd was Mk2 sailed by Jim Scott and crew from Victoria with a time of 74 sec for 1/4 mile; average speed 12.16 knots

3rd was The White Pearl sailed by Ron Garner and crew from NSW with a time of 84 secs for 1/4 mile; average speed 10.71

The speeds were average speeds, many crews went faster, but were unable to maintain it for the entire 1/4 mile course. See attachment for the best timed runs recorded.

Due to the forecast and expected stronger breezes this afternoon, it was decided to postpone Heat 4. This will be resailed on Sunday 10:30am.

So "Slow Day Sunday" will be a two race day.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Friday 2nd January 2009

We expected a weather change & we got it. The northerlies turned to south easterlies, and the race was delayed as a result. Once everyone got to the new start line, and the 5 minute gun went, most of the fleet got trapped by the light breeze and the run out tide. Some taking over 5 minutes to get to the start line after the gun had gone. Two boats got have the savy to pick the pin end start, got a nice breeze, and bolted to the first mark.

Most of the battles were taking place in the middle of the fleet, and the finishing places took shape through the downwind leg. Though some left it until the last "beat' to windward under shy kite to gain a few places. Oh how the wind changes.

First today was J - Doug Brewer and John Anderson. Second came Shake 'n Bake - Tim & Lauren Robba. Third was Mk 2 - James Scott & William Morris. 4th came Waterloo, 5th was Imagine - improving each race. 6th was Kraken Up - Gus & Richard Eckberg, first time in the top ten. 7th was Animated Paradox - improving all the time. 8th was Chilled Out, Black Pearl came in 9th - better than last race, and 10th was Smooth Criminal.

First Junior hime was Chemically Enhanced - another top 20 finish. The first Timber Hull boat home was Photron again.

Tomorrow we have "Need for Speed Saturday". We are running a quarter nautical mile timed broad reach, and bragging rights go to the fastest over the distance.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Wednesday 31st December - Heat 2

What a long hot day and a long hot race. The breeze died 5 knots N/NW, and hot - 33 degrees plus. What looked like a non race with the lead boats struggling in the light airs to make the 3 hour time limit, the weather gods turned up with 10 knots, and the tail end of the fleet all made it within the 1 hour cut off. Well done to the Race Committee boat and PRO Dean Steinback for holding their nerve.

Best place to be was on the water. After a general recall, the race turned into a amazing sight. Aftershock (SLMASC) cleared out and led handsomely down the first two reaches. Then from a (nautical) mile behind "J" - Doug Brewer and John Anderson from BSS, ran them down about 100m from the finish line. After a 2 hour 31 min race, 1st & 2nd were seperated by only 25 seconds.

Equally impressive were the Maryborough Sailing Club local crew in their first nationals - Blurred Image - Thomas Richers and Wayne (the president) Price who were 3rd. Outstanding effort guys.

Smooth Criminal sailed by James and Amy O'Brien from Williamstown Sailing Club (VIC), showed good speed in these lighter breezes to post 4th. Then came Mk 2 (Black Rock YC), Shake 'n Bake (BSS), Imagine (SLMASC), Waterloo (BSS), Chilled Out (Dobroyd Yacht Club), and Limelite (HPCYCSC) - Mark and Henry Whittle making it into the top ten for the first time in a while.

First Junior across the line was Chemically Enhanced (BSS) with Oliver Burgess and Will O'Keefe in 19th position overall - this was after being 10th at the top mark. Very encouraging guys.

 So after 2 races:

Overall: J 1st, Shake 'n Bake 2nd, Aftershock 3rd.

Masters - J 1st, Chilled Out 2nd, Limelite 3rd.

Juniors - Far Beyond Driven 1st, Chemically Enhanced 2nd, and Machiavellian 3rd.

Lay Day tommorrow - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all you 125ers from the Queensland Division.

2008-2009 National Tiles @ Hervey Bay QLD

Tuesday 39th December - Heat 1

Weather was again kind today, with steady 15-18 knots N/NW. Run out tide gave us a bit of chop to contend with.

Shake 'n Bake followed their Invitation Race win with a good win today from J and Waterloo. Black Pearl & Mk 2 (Jim Scott and William Morris) improved to 4th & 5th respectively. In 6th - Animated Paradox crewed by Bronwyn Seto & Nigel Seto (despite clipping the top mark). And not far away are NSW crews on Imagine - Peter Charlton & son Glen(7th) Aftershock (8th) & Chilled Out - Trevor Larance & Nathan Price (9th). Apollo sailed by Justin Spillman & Tiernan Williams rounded out the top ten. First Junior across the line was Far Beyond Driven sailed by Kaitlyn Duignan & Patrick Hanlon.

Heat 2 tommorrow in possibly the same or lighter winds, and another run out tide.

Socially the crews enjoyed Board games last night (with Twister being saved for NYE), pancakes this morning for morning tea. Tonight is Noodle Box dinner night, with over 85 being catered for.

2008-2009 National Titles from Hervey Bay

Monday 29th December - Official Regatta Briefing & Invitation Race

Today in balmy 30 degrees, we held the regatta briefing. Maryborough Historical Society in conjunction with the Commodore of MSC commenced proceedings with firing the ceremonial cannon.

Wind was 10 - 15 knots NNE. Just one invitation race was held. BSS boats figured prominently. Shake 'n Bake (Tim & Lauren Robba) did not get it all their own way, but won convincingly in the end, from Waterloo 2nd, and Aftershock (SLMASC) 3rd. What promises to be an exciting sub-plot to these Nationals is the "all Qld" Juniors fleet. Top Junior crew today were Chemically Enhanced (Oliver Burgess & Will O'Keefe).

Same forecast for Heat 1 tomorrow.
